Hemp Clothing

It is not just for hippies anymore!  Hemp clothing is making a big come back after years of being suppressed and undervalued. Due to the restrictive policies and attitudes around marijuana, growing hemp even for textiles is illegal in the US, even while the hemp plant that is commercially grown for fiber has no value as a hallucinogenic drug.  Not that we mind here at Cannabis Corner!  But the fact that the ability to create durable, cost-effective, eco-friendly textiles has been held back by the political environment around the use of this plant is a sad reality.

The cellulose fiber from hemp is used to make strong, weather resistant, versatile textiles that are made into jeans, dresses, shirts, hats, rope, and canvas.  Skin care products, building materials, paper and many nutritious food products are also made from hemp. Until the 1920′s, 80% of clothing was made from hemp!

For ecological reasons alone, hemp should be used more fully.  Hemp can be grown without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides.  And the entire plant is used, so there is no waste!  The seeds become a food grade oil that is rich with Omega fatty acids needed for so many of the body’s functions.  The seeds themselves are delicious and highly nutritious.  Hemp hearts are a good way to upgrade your diet.  Hemp as well produces more fiber per acre than trees and can be renewed two or three times per year.  Farmers can look to making a much bigger profit on their work by growing hemp.  Canadian hemp farmers make $80 per hectare while American grain farmers make $8.  This could revive farming in this country and put the money back into the pockets of the individual grower.

Hemp is being grown around the world.  In China, Russia, Canada, Europe.  The hemp from China is processed with chemicals, so it would be good to avoid hemp from that country until they come around to better practices.  Still they are far ahead of the US in this.  We think here at Cannabis Corner that this country needs to join the rest of the world and grow lots and lots of hemp!

Did I mention also that the fiber is beautiful as well as durable?  I know for myself I will be looking into upgraded my wardrobe with the beauty, strength and versatility of hemp.
