Top 3 Tips for Growing Cannabis Indoors

Cannabis use by mankind goes back for 12,000 years, making it one of the oldest known cultivated crops. It has been shown time and again to be a very medicinally beneficial herb with a list of uses too long to count. Despite this, in most countries of the world, including the United States, it is currently illegal to grow marijuana. However, here in America some of the laws in certain states are starting to change. Since 1996 when California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana, many states have been following suit. Depending on where you live in the country, you may or may not be able to grow cannabis legally. With twenty-nine states having medical marijuana, and eight having recreational, the odds are in your favor. If you do decide to start growing, I hope these tips help you out.

#1 Get quality seeds with good genetics. If you start with low to mid grade seeds, you reduce your chances of having a high-quality yield. Many people start out growing with whatever seeds they can find, in some cases even with the old dried out seeds at the end of bags. This is never an optimal scenario, ideally, you want to buy from reputable seed banks such as Swamp Boys Seeds, Top Dawg Seeds, or any other reputable seed bank. When you buy from good seed banks, you can pick whatever strains you want, and you know exactly what you’re getting.

#2 Give your plants plenty of light. Even when you’re starting with the best genetics possible, nothing is going to make up for having inadequate lighting. It’s important to use strong bright lights such as HPS, LECs, or LEDs that will provide your plants with everything they need. Also, keep in mind that the absolute minimum requirement for growing cannabis indoors is 33 watts per square foot. In most cases, the more light, the better. In addition to this, make sure that all of the light you’re using is contained within the grow room. In some situations, a lot of the light may be escaping through windows, etc. The more light you can keep in your room, typically the better your plants will grow.

#3 Provide plenty of soil and nutrient amendments. Having good soil is extremely important to growing quality cannabis. The pH level of the soil you’re using needs to be tested, and balanced if it is not at the right number; cannabis usually prefers roughly a 5.5 to 6.5 . One key thing to remember when giving your plants supplements is to keep their levels of nitrogen low. While they do need Nitrogen for vegetative growth, they don’t need it nearly as much for actually producing flowers. One key nutrient to give your plants is Phosphorus. It has been said time and time again how important phosphorous is for flower production. And one last supplement not to overlook would be potassium. Giving your plants plenty of potassium can increase the density and size of your buds.
